WHAT IS D.A.R.E.?

D.A.R.E., an acronym which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles, California, originating as a cooperative effort of the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles School District (LAUSD). The LAUSD health education specialists wrote the curriculum to be presented to the student n their local schools by uniformed police officers as the instructors.

The D.A.R.E. program started with ten (10) Los Angeles police officers and, as of 1996, has grown to more than 15,000 worldwide. In the state of Texas alone, there are approximately 900 certified D.A.R.E. instructors teaching in school systems statewide. The D.A.R.E. program has been successfully received in all 50 states in the US, and in 31 other countries and US territories.
